My Space To Think & Play

While writing and publishing the series about open source hardware and freedom ideas kept coming to me. During the process I discovered, that for me personally open source hardware provides something very interesting and beautiful on top to the other things I already wrote about: It gives me a space to think and to play towards a new economy.

Why a space to think?

I like it as a space to think because it allows thoughts and perspectives that I can believe in.

Open sourcing physical objects is not an utopia demanding a quick revolution for immediate change. It is not asking for riots, blood, prompt breaks, turn arounds or decapitations. It is not aggressive and free of discrimination and unavoidable ideology. There is no oversimplifying things. I don’t believe in this things as strategies for change that I can (or want!) push forward.

Open source instead is a road to go and explore step by step, in the world we live in.

Buckminster Fuller Quote
“You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.” (Buckminster Fuller)

Open source works perfectly within our capitalistic system. The success of open source software happened and happens mostly because capitalistic companies are pushing it, they use and produce open source software. Open source is often just the better development model, it produces better and more reliable outcomes, that are often cheaper to produce and easier to maintain. Open source is capitalistic.

At the same time open source explores and fosters a lot more things. Open knowledge empowers people. It gives the knowledge as means of production in the hands of many. It is good to limit down the power of big companies (at least in theory, no one knows what really will happen). It has to power to dissolve some of the big problems of capitalism. Open source is commonistic*. (commons?)

Open Source is not the thesis and not the antithesis of capitalism. It is more like a synthesis on a new level. It establishes a playground for a whole new logic, possible to explore within our current reality. And this is what it makes so interesting! So interesting to think about and work with. It might provide a gateway out of capitalism, we can set foot on without having to reject the current reality or fight it. Dream high and stay connected to the ground. Don’t break things, overcome them. Interesting “maybes” that look like worth and possible to explore.

And a place to play!

And because all of this it provides an interesting area “to play” for me. It allows action and experimenting without saying no the world around us. Yeah. Let’s develop some things. Open source is an invitation and freedom to codesign my world. Connected to reality. Not against the world, with it. I can do what I do together with the people I am working with.

As an artist interested in “production of reality” (e.g. through economy) I love this. And not only as an artist, also as a citizen and a human being.

I would love to illustrate this posting with an image of the young Karl Popper, but could not find one, that is free culture. Maybe someone can help. Thanks

Open Source Hardware & meine & deine Freiheit!

Old Guy

Danke
