(en; de)

This is another addition to my series about open source hardware and freedom. It is about Open Source Hardware and liberal freedom.

Some days ago i was at the Degrowth Conference in Leipzig on a panel-discussion with Michel Bauwens & John Restakis and i learned something there from Michel:

Open source hardware follows the ideology of liberalism.

And that is right. According to Wikipedia Liberalism is one of the three big political ideologies, conservatism & socialism are the two others. And this means that it has an idea of freedom that is not the only one and therefore not necessarily the right or a neutral one. It rates (simplified) the freedom of the individual highest. Maybe the better name for the series would have been: „Open Source Hardware and Liberal Freedom“.

„The ideology of liberalism“. This sheds some new light on this series, adds context and lookout points. I like that. Of course I do. I will think about it.

„The signatories of this Open Source Hardware definition recognize that the open source movement represents only one way of sharing information. We encourage and support all forms of openness and collaboration, whether or not they fit this definition.“ Afterword of the open source hardware definition and statement of principles

Open Source Hardware & meine & deine Freiheit!
